Direct transport or groupage – what suits high-value goods?
In groupage, many consignments share a vehicle, with transhipment at depots. That is cheaper but means more handling and less predictability. With direct transport, the consignment travels from shipper to recipient without transhipment.
What matters
- Handling steps
- Groupage: several transhipments. Direct transport: only loading and unloading.
- Predictability
- Direct transport allows narrower time windows and named handovers.
- Cost
- Groupage is usually cheaper; direct transport costs a whole vehicle.
- When groupage is enough
- Robust, well-packed goods without time pressure.
Planning questions
We clarify these points before quoting – the earlier they are known, the more precise the plan.
- How sensitive are the goods?
- How high is the value?
- Is there a narrow time window?
- Must the handover be to a named person?
- How important is price?

Questions and answers: Direct transport or groupage?
When is direct transport worthwhile?
For sensitive or very valuable goods, narrow time windows and handovers to named persons.
Is groupage unsuitable for high-value goods?
Not in principle. Robust, well-packed goods without time pressure can travel as groupage.
Why is direct transport more expensive?
Because a vehicle travels only for your consignment. In return, transhipments are avoided and the time window becomes more predictable.
