Transporting metrology equipment and measuring devices
Metrology depends on accuracy – and that can suffer from shocks. Measuring devices therefore travel in transport cases or manufacturer packaging, ideally without handling. Whether the device needs recalibration after transport is the manufacturer's decision.
What matters
- Vibration
- Shocks can affect calibration and adjustment. Calm handling and direct transport reduce loads.
- Transport cases
- Many measuring devices have their own cases with moulded inserts – the best packaging.
- Transport locks
- Moving axes, for example on coordinate measuring machines, are secured before transport.
- Calibration
- Whether recalibration is needed after transport is set by the manufacturer, not by transport.
Planning questions
We clarify these points before quoting – the earlier they are known, the more precise the plan.
- Which measuring device (category), and how is it packed?
- Are there transport locks, and are they fitted?
- Is it a loan device with return transport?
- Should indicators (shock, tilt) be attached to the packaging?
- Who takes over at the recipient?

Questions and answers: Metrology equipment
Does a measuring device need recalibration after transport?
The manufacturer decides. We ensure calm handling but do not check measured values.
How should metrology equipment be packed?
Ideally in a transport case or manufacturer packaging with transport locks fitted.
Do shock indicators on the packaging help?
Yes, they show at handover whether a strong shock occurred en route. The shipper attaches them.
